Archer Braun: The worse thing I can think of was a little over a year ago right before Halloween. I was skating skatelab and I was incredibly tired. I went to do a backside air in the bowl really high, I like saying I noticed everything except that I was in the air with a skateboard. I clipped and fell straight to my head at flat. I was knocked out, and had an impact seizure. I couldn't skate for two weeks, I'm pretty sure I can say that my helmet saved my life as a thinking human. Glad not to be a vegetable.

After watching this video and hearing that kids head pop I wrote these words below.

Why do skaters hate wearing helmets?

Skating is cool. Always has been. Skaters are super rebellious and talented and courageous. And it is these traits that have launched an entire footwear and apparel industry that markets the skateboarding look to the masses. These companies sell clothes and shoes to skaters and non-skaters who want to look cool, rebellious and talented.

If you look through a major skate magazine you will noticed that 90% of the ads are for shoes or clothing. And you will notice that 0% of the skaters in the mags are wearing helmets. The shoes and clothing companies have the money and control the magazines because they give the most money to the mags.

The clothing and shoe companies strongly urge pro skaters not to wear a helmets because if they are not wearing a helmet they look cooler and more courageous (think no condoms in porn) and if these pros look cool and courageous then the companies sell more clothes and shoes.

And here is the interesting part... if the pros don't wear helmets then the kids don't want to wear helmets. The pros have a strong influence over the kids. If pros start wearing tight jeans then the kids want tight jeans. If the pros start wearing pink bunny suits then kids would be skating in pink bunny suits.

Ultimately, the shoes and clothing companies want to keep selling the image of skating and they want to keep selling shoes and clothes so they will continue to forbid their pros from wearing helmets. They want to preserve the "image" of skateboarding. And they will continue to strongly urge the skate magazines NOT to run photos of any pros wearing helmets. And because of this kids will always feel like they are not cool or not pro if they are wearing a helmet.

The interesting twist is that the skate mags have lossed the power to the internet. And now the skateboarders can decide what is best for the future of skaters and skateboarding... and that might be wearing a helmet.

Should I wear a Soft Foam Helmet or a Hard Foam Helmet?

Question #1:

Should I wear a Soft Foam Helmet or a Hard Foam Helmet?

The Answer is: Hard Foam Helmet.

Reason:

If you are riding a skateboard, bike or roller skates. You should ALWAYS wear a CPSC certified helmet. And the only helmets that pass the CPSC test are hard foam (eps) helmets. A Hard Foam Helmet is much more effective at reducing the risks of concussion in Skateboarding, BMX and Roller Derby.

Question #2:

What the heck is a "multiple impact" helmet?

The Answer is:

You should just stop calling your helmet a "Multiple Impact" Helmet. Stop using this term. No helmet is "Multiple Impact" if it gets hit hard enough!!!!!

Both the soft foam helmets & hard foam helmets are considered multiple impact helmets in minor less significant hits. And in the case of severe impacts they are both considered single impact helmets.

The bottom line is that a hard foam helmet (that is CPSC Certified) absorb up to 5 times more impact than soft foam (non-certified) helmets. The whole point of wearing a helmet is to protect your brain from absorbing shock in head impacts. So why not wear a helmet that performs this task the best?

More Information: (if you want to learn even more about all this stuff)

Here is some clarification as to what is widely considered a “Single Impact” and what is considered “Multiple Impact”.

"Multiple Impact"

What is commonly known as, "Multiple Impact", has been a soft foam (eva foam , epp foam) non-certified helmet. The idea here is that the foam is soft and compresses on impact and than rebounds back to absorb another impact. The helmet does do this to an extent but after a heavy impact it should be replaced because it has most likely been compromised. In reality, “Soft Foam” helmets are merely minimum impact helmets. They do NOT pass any certification testing parameters! They do not pass the ASTM 1492 test or the CPSC standard test for Bike and Skate.

"Single Impact"

The idea of a “single impact” helmet is that you have hard foam EPS (Expanded Poly Styrene) as the inner foam mold. This EPS mold is designed to crush or crack on impact. By crushing or cracking it is absorbing the energy that would normally be going into your head.

The misconception of these helmets is that they can only take one impact. These helmets have to take multiple impact hits (4) in different areas of the helmet in order to pass the CPSC certification test. The hard foam helmet can take minor impacts, bumps and hits and still maintain its shock absorbing abilities just like a soft foam helmet. The Hard foam helmets are much more durable than many people think. However just like a soft foam helmet if the helmet is involved in a heavy impact it should be replaced.

Summary:

S-One highly recommends that you wear a Hard Foam (CPSC Certified) helmet because a hard foam (cpsc) helmet will protect your head better than a Soft Foam (non-cpsc) Helmet. Both helmets are multiple impact for low impacts. And both helmets are are single impact in the case of heavy slams. The only difference is that the Hard Foam helmet absorbs more impact in the heavy slams. Get it? Good. :)

Joe Eale - Local North Shore Big Wave Charger and also a Local Talent at the Banzai Skatepark. Joe just returned from the E R where he received stitches from the reef out at Pipeline earlier this morning. Here is a guy who stands at 6'4" and weighing in at around 250lbs, and a very recognizable figure on the North Shore. There is very little that can hold this guy back from charging, on land or sea. So, it's quite understandable that Joe, with his new stitches, straight from the E.R. is here at the skatepark charging big airs over the hips.

OK, here comes this guy blasting over the hip, and what this???? A micro grom weighing maybe 50lbs wet, coming blindly around the corner? He's right in the direct path with this fast moving, high flying Arnold Shwarzeneger from hell !!! I'm not sure how Joe did it, I can't even remember really picture it in my mind, it happened so fast! But Joe managed to turn his shoulders before landing and somehow avoid CRUSHING this 3.8ft mini preschooler.

But Joe had turned himself around trying to save the mini grom and was now falling backwards at close to 20mph, which wouldn't be so bad, if it was a pillow he was going to land on. This is a big guy, any wreck is going to be monumental with that much power behind it. Joe is a fast moving power skater. When he comes at you, it'll look the same as it does when Ben Schroeder is closing in on you. He took the HEAVIEST slam on the back of his head I have ever witnessed, I mean, that helmet was buffering some serious G Force when his head slammed on the concrete deck.

I have no doubt the S-ONE HELMET he was wearing saved his life. He actually posed for a picture for me. I wanted to take the picture because I was amazed by how this helmet saved his life! Let's see, 260lbs moving at just under 20mph? You do the math. When I asked him why he was wearing the helmet, he told me his good friend Gary Owens recently suffered a serious head injury because he was not using a helmet, so Joe decided to get one. This is a testament of a life that was saved today because of S-ONE HELMETS!

HPU Basketball Player Dies After Skateboard Fall (Honolulu, Hawaii)

Kameron Steinhoff, 21, was skateboarding with his high school buddies in a residential area of Temple Valley in Kaneohe early Tuesday morning when he fell, according to Steinhoff's brother, Keoni Steinhoff.

"I guess he was going downhill and he lost control He tried to stop. He slipped, fell, whacked the back of his head. His friends found him pinned under a parked car," Keoni Steinhoff said.

Kameron Steihoff was a star basketball player for Punahou School. He was named the tournament's outstanding player when he led Punahou to the state championship in 2008.

He was also an up and coming player for HPU.

Second Week in medically induced coma.

After first surgery Scar. I had to wear a helmet all the time to protect my skull. My skull was stored at the hospital so that they could put it back on once the swelling on my brain went down.

This was my Miss-Shaped head with out half of my skull.

After my second surgery when they put my skull back on my head. There is a drain tube next to my right armpit.

2nd surgery staples 1st day out of the hospital.

1) How old are you?

My name is Ernie and I'm 33 yrs old

2) Where do you work and what is your position in the Company?

I work for Hanger 94 as a retail manager and assist with shoe buying and some hard goods

3) How many years have you been skating?

I've been skating for 26 years

4) When did your accident happen?

My accident happened on august 1st 2011

5) Can you explain exactly what happened?

Suffering from a slight prior concussion I decided to race a friend down my hill. There was 4 of us hombres all together 3 at the top of the hill and one at the bottom. I hit the hill going about 20 mph and at the bottom was going close to 50mph when I clipped my friend at the bottom, I went straight to my head, hip and tail bone.

6) What injuries did you sustain?

I fractured my skull, hip and tailbone. I was rushed immediately to Mercy Hospital where I passed away twice. The neurology surgeon was called in to excavate 50% of my skull due to overwhelming bleeding of the brain and swelling. After surgery I was sent into a 3 week coma... Bottom line is that my case is of some miracle work. I shouldn't even be alive, or seriously handicap. In the hospital rehab I saw all

kinds of people that were suffering from the same type of accident that will never be the same, or have been in rehab for 5 plus years. Protecting your head is no joke and I'm extremely lucky. I feel like my chosen path now is to educate safety awareness.

7) Were you wearing a helmet?

I was not wearing a helmet but if I was it would have
been S-One.

8) Prior to your accident what was your stance on wearing helmets?

Prior to the accident I never wore helmets unless I absolutely had too. I thought I was too cool for one, boy I really found out the hard way. So now going post accident I really try to strive for helmet safety for young kids and teenagers. I love skateboarding and now its been taken away from me (for awhile) because I wasn't thinking correctly.

9) What are you thoughts about wearing a helmet now?

I'm all for wearing helmets and teaching safety, because I got very lucky that I didn't end up in a wheel chair or having any other handy cap.

10) How is your physical and mental state now and what are your prospects for the future? I.E. will you make a full recovery or forever be changed.

My physical and mental state are still recovering, and I'm just

still grasping on to the fact I'm a lucky individual...its

overwhelming! My prospects for the future is to keep my passion for skateboarding, and hopefully soon get back on my board for a switch front side bluntside a trick I re-learned days before this incident. I know a full recovery is just days around the corner, and you bet my life has been changed forever.

11) How has your life changed since the accident?

My life has changed from the accident in so many ways. Before my second surgery I was wearing a helmet at work and had to deal with peoples hollow remarks, which gave me the perfect opportunity to display that I'm not wearing the helmet to be funny. I was able to teach a parent along with their child about helmet safety, and they would both understand how important it is. I feel reborn and as though I have a second chance to affect the lives of others in a positive way.

12) What has all that has happened to you taught you?

This incident has taught me that life can change in a second! So take nothing for granted. Its also taught me to love and embrace every moment on life because whether you skate,bike,bmx,snowboard or motorcross you should practice safety because it can be taken from you in a flash.

S-One Big Head Helmet - A Day In The Testing Lab (CPSC Test)

The S-One Big Head Helmet is attached to a headform and the helmet & headform are
subjected to a 2.06 meter drop creating a velocity of 6.20 m/s.
In order for a helmet to pass the CPSC impact test, the helmet must protect the headform
and reduce the impact energy to under 300G's

Note: A 2.06 meter drop at a velocity of 6.20 m/s simulates a 14 mph crash or a 6 ft slam to the ground.
(This is an independent / government approved testing lab.)

The same helmet is hit multiple times ( 4x in different places) . And each time the helmet must reduce the impact to
under 300 G's. This is hit #1.

In order to pass the CPSC test the helmets must reduce the impact to under 300 G's. As you can see here the S-One Big Head Helmet reduces the impact to 228 G's. The S-One Big Head Helmet passes with flying colors.

The S-One Premium Helmet is back in stock. And they sell super fast in states that don't have helmet laws or state mandated helmet safety standards. However, we want to let skaters know that soft foam (non-cpsc) helmets are not nearly as protective as CPSC certified helmets. And we (s-one) actually recommend that you wear a CPSC Certified helmet. So why do we even make the non-certified helmets?

Moms always ask us - Why do skate helmet companies (s-one, triple 8, pro-tec, bern) even make non-certified helmets?

Alot of Moms and Dads asks us why we even make the soft foam helmets if they don't pass the CPSC impact testing process. Our answer is: There are alot of skaters that grew up wearing soft foam helmets and refuse to wear anything else. And although the soft foam helmets are much less protective than the CPSC certified helmets they are better than nothing. So, we (s-one) make the soft foam helmets for all the stubborn, hardcore, crusty rippers out in the world.

Summary:

Soft Foam Helmets do not protect your head as well as the CPSC Certified Helmets. Soft Foam Helmets will only protect your head from very low impact slams. (reality check... very low means: 5 mph or drops from 3 feet) So please understand that Soft Foam (non-cpsc) helmets do not even come close to passing the skate and bike helmet standards set forth by the CPSC. (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

Who wears soft foam helmets?

Older skaters that will only wear a soft foam helmet because that is what they always wore (because they are comfy) or image conscious teenagers that don't even want to wear a helmet at all. But remember old crusty dude and too-cool teenager... CPSC Certified helmets are much safer and will protect your brains against a real slam.

Hockey Helmets?

Also, some roller derby girls think that hockey helmets are more protective than cpsc helmets. Wrong. Very wrong. Hockey Helmets with EPP (expanded polypropylene foam) DO NOT pass the CPSC test. Hockey Helmets will not adequately protect your brains / head from a 14 mph slam or 6 foot drop. And top it off... hockey helmets are super expensive ($150). The Hockey Helmet is a glorified soft foam helmet. No bueno.

Austin skated in the Shred for Autism event this past Saturday at the YMCA in Encinitas,
it was a great event for the kids and family's with Autism.

The staff and their event sponsors did a great job! Austin was the main attraction and had a blast with the kids!
He put on a Demo in the Vert for all the kids and parents, and then handed out stickers, took pictures and signed helmets.

EPS Foam:

The EPS Liner absorbs the impact. It is lightweight and is designed to fit nice and low your head. If a helmet does not have EPS foam it won't pass the CPSC Certified Test! Always buy a helmet that has EPS Foam (and that has a CPSC Certified sticker on the inside).

Sizing liners don't protect your head, they just make sure the helmet fits nice and comfy on your head. The fabric is anti-microbrial and soaks up sweat. The sizing liners are replaceable so if your head grows you can use a different thickness sizing liner. If you wear your helmet alot you can always order some new fresh liners.

For all the 2011 Lifer Helmets the sizing liners are color coded so you know what size the helmet is by looking at the liner. Small (red), Medium (beige), Large (black), X-Large (green), 2X-Large (blue), 3X-Large (purple).

August 1 - 7th 2011

The Coastal Carnage Pro Skate contest is going down the August 6th and August 7th. And Converse built a mini bowl also that is open to the public.(open to the public from Aug 1 - Aug 7th) But you have to wear a helmet when you skate it... so Converse invited S-One Helmet Co. to offer free S-One rental helmets. So if you live in the Huntington Beach area come on down to the US Open and skate the mini-bowl for free. It is super fun and you can rent a free S-One Helmet also. The mini bowl is super fun and great for kids and adults of all ages to shred.

Slam Story : Austin Poynter

Austin Poynter (15) is an up n coming vert skater. He blasts overhead airs on vert and in the combi. He is learning new tricks all the time. Austin is def pushing his skating to new limits on a daily basis. Austin had grown up wearing a soft foam helmet (non-certified) and we strongly recommended to him and his Dad that he should be wearing a hard foam helmet (cpsc certified). We sent him the S-One Lifer Helmet to check out because it fits low like a soft foam helmet but it is 5x more protective. He has been wearing the Lifer Helmet ever since. Over the weekend we received this email from Gerry Poynter.

"Austin took a very bad slam yesterday on the Vert ramp, hit so hard he bounced! It was one of those loud slams that turns heads. Had a late night at the ER, but he will be fine...:) Thank goodness he had on the S-One Lifer Helmet (hard foam) or he probably would have been knocked out and more seriously injured! Needless to say, its beach time for a week or so! Not a bad way to recupe..lol And so grateful for the Lifer Helmet, it came through.
