Big News!  Virginia Tech tested some of the top selling skate helmets and they rated the S1 Lifer Helmet as the #1 "Skate Certified" Helmet !

About Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University:  The Virginia Tech Helmet Lab developed a methodology for testing helmets for their ability to reduce concussions and allows researchers to provide unbiased helmet ratings that allow consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing helmets.

A message from S1: As a helmet company our mission was to create a skate helmet (S1 Lifer Helmet) that we could 100% recommend to family, friends and team riders.

We want to give a BIG thanks to 1) all the skate shops that offer the S1 Lifer to their customers 2) All the skaters that trust their heads to the S1 Lifer and 4) All of the parents that have chosen S1 for their little shredders.

RIP Jeff Grosso

Jeff Grosso was a great guy and lived life 1000x over. I know how much he loved riding skateboards and I know how much he loved his son Oliver.  If he misses anything from this world it will most certainly be spending time with his son.

We would talk about helmets, pads, skateboarding and being Dads. He always left funny messages (like singing Bob Dylan or some self deprecating joke).  His insights into things were always from a unique perspective that were backed up with eons of experience.  In one of our first conversations he said," I have heard nothing but great things about you guys."

Rest in Peace Jeff - it was honor to know you.

Jeff Grosso. All time legendary skateboarder. Jeff reinforced what it meant to be a skateboarder.
Birth: 1968 - 2020.
Cause of Death: Heart Attack (Age 51)

S1 Lifer Helmet - Testing Lab - Soft Foam Helmet VS S1 Lifer Helmet

Soft Foam Helmets test ok at the 2.5 foot drop height. But when dropped at 3.5 feet (ASTM Multiple impact Test) the peak G's spike over 300 G's. And when dropped at 7 feet (Current Helmets Safety Standard / CPSC) the Peak G's spiked to over 800+ G's.

There is a video online circulating showing a old school soft foam helmet (Flyaway) performing well on a 2.5 foot drop. On the video the soft foam helmet performed better than an S1 Lifer Helmet. And the soft foam helmet company made a big deal about how much better their helmet was than an S1 Lifer Helmet. My first question after watching the video was “Why did they choose a 2.5 foot drop height? It is such a low drop height! The ASTM standard for skate is 3.87 feet and the current helmet safety standard for skate and bike helmets is 6.5 feet. Why did the choose a 2.5 foot drop height? I suspected they tested their helmet at higher drop heights and it didn’t perform well so they only released the results from a 2.5 foot test.  This highly suspect video prompted me to go purchase 2 of the branded soft foam helmets and test them at a 2.5’ height, the 3.87’ (astm test) height and at 7 foot height (cpsc test). And we also tested the S1 Lifer Helmet at these heights.

Observations: Flyaway tested ok at the 2.5 foot drop height. But when dropped at 3.5 feet the peak G's spike over 300 G's. And when dropped at 7 feet the Peak G's spiked to over 800+ G's.
The soft rubbery foam disperses energy ok at a low height of 2.5' feet but after 2.5' the soft rubbery foam does not disperse energy adaquately and too much energy enters the head form resulting in a high spike of G.s

Summary:

Flyaway / 2.5 ft drop height / Front / Peak G’s: 86 G (raw test footage video 5)
Flyaway / 2.5 ft drop height / Back / Peak G’s: 148 G (raw test footage video 1)

Flyaway / 3.87 ft drop height / Front / Peak G’s: 380 G’s  (raw test footage video 9)
Flyaway / 3.87 ft drop height / Side / Peak G’s: 841 G’s  (raw test footage video 11)

Flyway / 7 ft drop height / Front / Peak G’s: 909 G’s (raw test footage video 7)
Flyaway / 7 ft drop height / Back / Peak G’s: 963 G’s (raw test footage video 3)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
S1 Lifer Helmet / 2.5 ft drop height / Front / Peak G’s: 107 Gs (raw test video 6)
S1 Lifer Helmet / 2.5 ft drop height / Back / Peak G’s: 102 G’s (raw test video 2)

S1 Lifer Helmet / 3.87 ft drop height / Front / Peak G’s: 168 G’s (raw test video 10)
S1 Lifer Helmet / 3.87 ft drop height / Side / Peak G’s: 175 G’s (raw test video 12)

S1 Lifer Helmet / 7 ft drop height / Front /  Peak G’s: 164 G’s (raw test video 8)

S1 Lifer Helmet / 7 ft drop height / Back /  Peak G’s: 176 G’s (raw test video 4)

One of the best vert skaters of all time , Mike Frazier, talking about the S1 Lifer Helmet

I just had the “REAL LIFE” test yesterday, only it was from 12 feet high, not 6 1/2 feet... That shit worked like a charm! Took a digger and had a little snooze today for about 10-15 seconds …..12 foot high and concrete is real unforgiving. Today the neck is a little stiff, other than that, I’m good. I’d hate to think how I’d be feeling, or how bad It could have been if it was a regular old school foam pad helmet. The old foam padded helmets that I used to wear offered little to no protection. My compressed fusion foam S1 Lifer helmet absorbed the impact, cracked like it was supposed to, and saved me. There’s no avoiding the KO when you hit your head hard enough, but a good helmet definitely minimizes the severity of the concussion. Thanks for saving my head  ❤️😘👍 @s1helmets

Buying a helmet for someone for Christmas

Buying a helmet for someone for Christmas

The Lifer helmet is available in 3 different shell sizes to accommodate different size heads.
Measure your head ...

If it measures 18 - 20.25" get an S1 Mini Lifer Helmet
If it measures 20.5"- 23.25" get an S1 Lifer Helmet
If it measures 23.5" - 24.5" get an S1 Mega Lifer Helmet

Fun fact:
Most kids ages 6 and under will fit into the S1 Mini Lifer Helmet.

And 90% of people ages 7 and up fit into an S1 Lifer Helmet.

If you are buying a helmet for someone and you can't measure their head - follow this general rule of thumb.
Ages 6 and under order an S1 Mini Lifer Helmet (and buy a Fit All Kit so they can fit it perfectly) .
Ages 7 and up order an S1 Lifer Helmet (and buy a Fit All Kit so they can fit the helmet perfectly).

But your safest bet is to measure your / their head

How to measure your head. (picking a helmet)

If you want to get an S1 Lifer Helmet for yourself or your son, daughter, cousin, friend etc.
1st step is to measure their head.

23.5" - 24.5" get an S1 Mega Lifer Helmet

Helpful Hint:
90% of people Ages 7 to Adult measure 20.5" - 23" and up fit into an S1 Lifer Helmet.
Most kids 6 and under measure at 20.5" or under and fit into an S1 Mini Lifer.

If you are buying a helmet for someone and you can't measure their head - use this general rule of thumb....

Ages 7 and up - get and S1 Lifer Helmet. And buy a Fit All Kit so they can make sure the helmet fits perfectly.
Ages 6 and under... get an S1 Mini Lifer Helmet and get a Fit All Kit just to make sure.

Questions from a customer about soft foam helmets vs S1 Lifer helmet

Questions from a customer.

Why buy certified vs. a soft padded helmet?

Certified passes helmet standards ie: it will protect your head better

I've seen videos of the Kanoa Flyaway crowd getting up from slams and kids getting knocked out with hard styrofoam helmets?

If you hit your head hard enough in any helmet you can get knocked out or die... kanoa, s1 anything...
i have seen people hit their heads without helmets on and be ok... and I had a friend die with no helmet on in a pool in AZ

al partanen got knocked out for 5 minutes in a soft foam.
chris russell got knocked out for 5 minutes in a soft foam
adam taylor was airlifted an in a coma for a while - wearing soft foam
heimana reynolds got knocked out for a 1 minute while wearing an s1 lifer helmet
tony mag got knocked for a long time in a soft foam and swears by certified helmets
kevin staab still wears an old 1 soft foam - cause he says he just isnt going to hit my head that hard..

basically - yeah kanoas look rad (and better than nothing) - and soft foam helmets fit lower on the dome (and better than nothing)- but if you want the most protection get an S1 Lifer Helmet.

oh and Mark Lake got a bad concusssion in soft foam - headaches for a long time.

What is your personal take about certified helmets ... without sending a video and do you stand by it?

100% stand by the s1 lifer helmet - WE STOPPED MAKING SOFT FOAM HELMETS !!!! - and we could sell thousands!!! I make my kids wear an s1 lifer helmet - and I encourage all the young rippers to wear them .. we had an old soft foam floating around the garage and i dont let them wear em. I have seen the soft foam helmets fail all the impact tests in the lab.

We grew up wearing kanoa's and soft foam skate helmets - and we took a kanoa and our soft foam helmets into a testing lab - and neither the Kanoa or the soft foam helmet will pass the ASTM multiple impact test or the CPSC high impact test...  They fail bad. The impact goes right through the foam.

We made an ethical decision and stopped making soft foam helmets.

Does Eddie Elguera still ride for S1?
yes,  the s1 lifer helmet is eddie's favorite helmet - that is why he asked us to make him a special one with stripes on it. Eddie understands the science behind the S1 Lifer Helmet.

vert Skaters are like special ops

shop.s1helmets.com
vert skaters are like special ops. super dangerous yet rewarding. a lifelong dedication and only a small percentage have the will and talent. and it is a family. that is why we made the S1 Lifer Helmet. for vert skaters. to help protect their heads. shock mitigation and to protect the force. you hear about seals shooting themselves in the heart and leaving letters to study their brains. Well, in skateboarding we know more than a few vert and downhill skateboarders that have committed suicide. And one has to wonder - has head injury been the underlying catalyst for the depression and pain and confusion and self destruction. skateboarding and special ops have alot in common. Preserve the force. Preserve the Skateboarding family. - chris terins s1 helmets 310 464 8179
